Precision Construction Hosts Diversity & Inclusion Event

Research shows that inclusive workplaces make better businesses — but how can construction companies build a foundation of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an industry where only 10% of workers are women, 6% are African American, and 2% are Asian?

As a minority-owned business, Precision is continually exploring ways to improve in these areas, and last month we welcomed Ciru Anne Muchiri and Vaughn Williams III, MA, the supplier diversity project managers for SoCalGasBrooke Langle the founder of Terra Verde Environmental ConsultingAaron Emi of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of California, and Heather Mullin of The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County for a daylong event focused on diversity.

SoCal Gas has championed diversity since 1978, and by 2021, had gained an impressive 40% diverse supplier rate, with goals set at 43% for 2022 and a particular focus on adding LGBQ+ and African American contractors. Terra Verde’s Brooke Langle explained the benefits of becoming certified as a minority business owner – and her initial personal hesitation with becoming certified. Aaron Emi, who has been a tremendous resource for us at Precision, talked about some of the ways the Chamber can assist growing businesses with opportunities such as mentorships.

After presentations and networking, we set out for Pismo Preserve, where we enjoyed a guided hike with Heather Mullin of the Land Conservancy, an organization committed to creating accessible outdoor experiences for everyone.
