21 Nov Precision Construction Services Awarded Design-Build Contract for the Bureau of Prison’s Metropolitan Correctional Center in San Diego

Precision Construction Services was awarded the Design-Build contract for the Bureau of Prison’s kitchen at the Metropolitan Correctional Center located in Downtown San Diego, CA. The existing kitchen has already seen multiple facelifts, but (due to the deteriorating conditions of the floor drains and plumbing lines under the slab) the whole space needs an extensive overhaul.
The area of work is approximately 4,000 SF which will include the demolition and replacement of the slab, underground plumbing waste and vent lines. Precision will also be handling numerous mechanical and electrical scopes of work, new ceilings and walls throughout, and adding a new supervisor office. One of the most challenging factors of the project is the site logistics as the kitchen is centrally located within a high-security prison. In order to complete the work, access will need to be provided for the required heavy equipment and removal of debris which will entail the demolition of ingress/egress pathways that require careful planning and coordination with the prison security. The second most challenging component is the tight construction schedule. The prison will be without a kitchen during construction which puts an enormous amount of pressure on Precision to limit the amount of time spent on the project. Precision is carefully working through these and many more logistics during this beginning design and preconstruction phase of the project.
Rob Dittman, the project superintendent had this to say about the work: “I am very excited for the opportunity to continue this relationship with the Bureau of Prisons. The San Diego kitchen will be challenging for sure, and we are excited to step up to the challenge. We have worked tirelessly to think through every detail of this project and now I’m eager to see it get built.”
Over the past year, Precision has successfully completed a multitude of projects for the Bureau of Prisons at numerous facilities across the Western Region of the United States. Other past work for the BOP includes:
Hawaii Roof, Los Angeles Cooling Towers, San Diego Waste Pump Upgrades, Terminal Island Freezer Warehouse, Lompoc Emergency Temp Hospital, and more.
The kitchen design is anticipated to be done at the end of December with construction starting in the new year.
